Legal Support for Victims

altChennaI :We strongly condemn the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and the police crackdown on the students and their supporters.  The way in which the BJP government acted after the February 9th incidents makes us wonder whether we are living in Germany under Hitler.  The draconian sedition law enacted by the colonial British Govt against the freedom fighters is now used against students who had assembled to express their views about the way in which the Indian Government executed Afsal Guru.

The hanging of Afsal Guru without following the mandatory procedures such as informing his wife and child was condemned by eminent persons such as Justice Markandeya Katju and Justice A.P.Shah.The Supreme Court while confirming his death sentence had said he should die to satisfy the conscience of the nation, not a perfectly legal way of dismissing an appeal.  Even the BJP’s alliance partner People’s Democratic Party of J&K had condemned it. Speaking in support of the right to self determination is not a crime. It is said that somebody in the crowd had shouted pro Pakistani slogans.  Now a video clipping in circulation shows that it is some ABVP students shouting these slogans. It seems it is a pre planned mischief to attribute false motives to the students who had organized the event.  The Delhi Police is picking  up many innocent youths saying that they resemble JNU students.

The former Delhi University Prof S.A.R. Geelani was also arrested yesterday under sedition and criminal conspiracy charges for conducting a press meet in support of Afsal Guru.

Extra-Judicial Killings versus Rule of Law PDF Print E-mail
Legal Support for Victims

Introduction:
The latest revelation that top-ranking policemen in Gujarat murdered four citizens — including Ishrat Jahan, a teenage college student — in cold blood for 'selfish motives', should lead to total abrogation of the practice of 'encounters' in the country. Extra- judicial killings have been a regular and continuous feature in the region since the emergence of insurgency. Whether they are carried out by State agencies or non- state entities is not the concern. The way human life and dignity has been assaulted and killing with sheet and utmost brutality without adhering to any principles of justice is the basic concern. It is the duty of the state through the law enforcing agencies or Police to bring those who violate the law before the Court for judicial determination of rights and liabilities and accordingly, deliver justice.

Legal Support for Victims

Nandita Haksar, Yosuf Hatim Muchala, Maulana Jalaluddin Umri in the front row and othersWith rise in terror attacks in India in the last couple of years for which Muslims were blamed – in a few cases maybe rightly but generally without going into probe and proof – the already backward and deprived community have faced a new serious problem: picking of their youths from here and there, gross violation of their civil and human rights and boycott of lawyers to take up cases of terror suspects. The fast depressing situation demanded formation of a group with a nationwide structure and a network of legal activists and paralegal social workers from village to the national capital.
