Indian JailsThe Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) on 8 May had issued a statement exposing the controversial steps taken by the Rajasthan state government in the excuse of ensuring security in the state. The statement also highlights the misuse of Section 109 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973 by the law enforcement agencies, including the judges and lawyers. This provision of law is misused by the authorities, particularly the police and the Executive Magistrates, to lock up the poor migrants who come to the cities in India seeking employment and to escape from poverty, starvation and caste and religion based discrimination in rural India. Unfortunately for many, what awaits them in the city is the brute misuse of law and procedures by the authorities, with which they imprison individuals without any due process of law and with impunity.

U.S. Inks Nuclear Deal with UAE Cited for Human Rights Abuses PDF Print E-mail

(CNSNews.com) – The State Department forged a nuclear cooperation deal with a Middle East ally that the department’s own human rights report criticizes for censorship of the media, trials without juries, arrests of homosexuals, flogging of  prisoners who violate Islamic rules, and religious sermons drafted by a government agency, among other concerns.
The nuclear agreement between the United States and the UAE was concluded five days before President Barack Obama was inaugurated. The White House is expected to send it to Congress after April 20 for review.  The State Department’s 2008 Human Rights Report on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is highly critical of the nation,which is made up of seven semiautonomous emirates. But it also credits the wealthy country – population of nearly 5 million, less than a quarter of whom are citizens – for prosecuting police corruption and allowing women to advance in the government.

IMPHAL, Mar 2: The killings of non-Manipuri migrants in the state by unknown gunmen have been strongly condemned by people all over the state.  A sit-in protest was staged today by the Chingamakha Model Club and the combined Meira Paibi Lups of the Singjamei area against the killing of a non-local named Sarjiban yesterday night at the rented house he was staying at Chingamakha Phura Makhong.
