Sikh protection for British QueenLONDON -- Queen Elizabeth II has switched bearskin hats for turbans outside Buckingham Palace, where Sikh soldiers have begun guarding the monarch and her treasures, Britain's defense ministry said Friday. Signaler Simranjit Singh and Lance Cpl. Sarvjit Singh are the first Sikhs to take part in patrols outside the queen's residence and to stand watch over the Crown jewels at the Tower of London across town.  Guard duties are usually carried out by the Guards of Household Division, famed for their bearskin hats and crimson coats that attract picture-taking tourists in their thousands. The ministry said the Sikh soldiers instead wore turbans and blue uniforms.

RIYADH: A frail, mentally disabled man and another worker suffering from advanced-stage tuberculosis are among over 500 Indian workers currently held in the Somaishi Deportation Center in Riyadh. Every Ramadan, the Saudi Arabian king offers clemency for nonviolent offenders of relatively minor crimes in accordance with the spirit the holy month. “A majority of the Indians currently lodged in the center’s two clogged and crowded halls are runaway workers or have been taken to the center by police or employers for petty crimes, not for committing any major offense,” said one inmate, who identified himself as Mohammed Ashraf.

Those Indians expatriates in Spain seeking extension to reside but could not extend their stay because they couldn't obtain "legislation" may soon be legalized. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Spanish Authorities have choked out a solution to a technical problem, which was proving to be a major obstacle in obtaining legality for some Indians in Spain.

The problem started earlier in the year when nearly 5000 Indians seeking extension to stay in Spain including business community and professionals were asked by the Spanish Authorities to get their police verification done by the central authority in India, but these people failed to produce the required document and could only get the documents verified by their respective state police because in India police being a state subject. This issue lingered on for months and created hurdles for the Indians seeking legality.
