Human Right Activists' Arrest: NCHRO Holds Secretariat Dharna PDF Print E-mail

Dr. J Devika,writer and social activist, inaugurates secretariat dharna organised by NCHROThiruvananthapuram: National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) organised secretariat dharna in Kerala, to protest against the unwarranted arrests of human rights activists Adv. N M Siddique and Abdussalam from Kochi. Dharna was inaugurated by writer and social activist Dr. J Devika. She said that it was unbecoming to intellectuals and writers of Kerala to keep mum when this kind of police atrocities became far and wide even to the human rights activists. She also called for resistance against the attempts from the media to tarnish the image of certain organisations and sections in the society. Meghnath, documentary maker and human rights activists from Jharkhand, Kantha Meghnath, Reni Ilin, national co-ordinator, NCHRO, Karamana Rasaq, Pravachambalam Ashraf Moulavi also spoke.

Kochi police had arrested Siddique and Salam last week alleging that they had seized objectionable materials from NCHRO district office here. Both are in judicial custody now.Meanwhile Siddique and Salam moved bail application to the High Court yesterday, which will be heard tomorrow by Justice Hema.

Activist Laha Gopalan has been chosen for the third Mukundan C Menon award instituted by the Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (CHRO). He has been selected for the award for his inspiring leadership to the Chengara land movement spearheaded by ''Sadhujana Vimochana Samyukthavedi'' for the last one-and-a-half years, award jury told reporters here today. The award, carrying a purse of Rs 10,000 and citation, would be presented to him on December ten, the International Human Rights Day.

Kochi: A public hearing headed by former Mumbai High Court Judge V. Suresh, human rights activist John Dayal and chairperson of the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) A. Vasu has described as “miscarriage of justice” the Kerala High Court conditions for bail to 30 of the 139 Muslims currently in Kozhikode District Jail. They are facing trial for their alleged involvement in the second of the twin communal incidents that led to the death of nine persons in Marad, a fishing village near Kozhikode.
