New Delhi, March,2017
The demonstration was organized by various worker groups to show solidarity with the jailed workers and in protest against the judgment pronounced in the 2012 Maruti plant case.
The Maruti workers and members of other factory unions decided to move the Punjab and Haryana high court against the conviction of 31 workers. The workers said the investigation done by the special investigation team (SIT) into the incident was not fair, demanding a judicial inquiry.
Unions said there was no planned conspiracy behind the 2012 incident. Besides workers want that the Maruti to take back all 546 employees that it sacked after the incident in 2012. NCHRO Delhi chapter General Secratry Ansar Indori participated and said the 2012 incident was sparked off by a minor altercation between the management and workers over the working conditions in the factory.
Speakers in the protest pointed out the manner in which cases against management and owners for violation of labour laws are procrastinated while cases against workers for protests and violence are fast tracked and harsh punishments delivered.
Earlier this month, Additional District and Sessions Judge R P Goyal,Gurgaon Sessions Court had convicted 31 Maruti Workers.Of the 148 workers arrested, charged and jailed for over 3 years, 117 were acquitted from all charges, 13 were charged with murder and attempt to murder and 18 were charged with causing grievous injury. The quantum of punishment differs: 13 workers were sentenced to life imprisonment, 4 were given 5 years imprisonment and the remaining 14 were let off on the basis of the sentence undergone. Defence lawyers Rebecca John and Vrinda Grover asked for the release of 18 accused and said they would challenge the sentence in the Punjab and Haryana high court.
